National Grid plc, together with its subsidiaries, engages in the transmission and distribution of electricity and gas in the United Kingdom and the United States. Its Transmission business owns and operates high voltage electricity transmission network in England, Scotland, and Wales; the gas national transmission system in Great Britain; the electricity interconnector between England and France; storage facilities for liquefied natural gas (LNG); and high voltage electricity transmission networks in New York and in New England. The company?s Gas Distribution business engages in the ownership and operation of four gas distribution networks in the Great Britain; and gas distribution networks in upstate New York, New York City, Long Island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island. National Grid?s Electricity Distribution and Generation segment owns electricity distribution networks in upstate New York, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island; operates and manages electricity transmission and distribution network in Long Island on behalf of the Long Island Power Authority; and generates electricity through oil and gas-fired steam turbine, gas turbine, and diesel driven generating units in Long Island. Its Non-Regulated and Other businesses includes metering services, property management, LNG importation terminal on the Isle of Grain, and the construction and operation of an electricity interconnector between the Netherlands and the United Kingdom; and LNG storage, LNG road transportation, unregulated transmission pipelines, gas fields, and home energy services in the United States. As of March 31, 2009, the company served approximately 19 million residential, commercial, and business consumers. National Grid plc was founded in 1990 and is based in London, the United Kingdom.
